The Master of the Jaal: Naseem Ahmad

Naseem Ahmad
Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India
Naseem Ahmad does not measure his work in hours, but in seasons. A fourth-generation master and a rare, expert Naqshabandi, he possesses the technical intellect required to tie and create the jaals, the complex design blueprints of the loom, with absolute precision. Naseem stays rooted in a pace that allows for perfection, often spending up to twelve months to complete a single Baluchari panel or sari.
A National Award winner (2017), his expertise goes beyond creation into the realm of revival. He is one of the few craftsmen with the skill to reconstruct saris over a century old, meticulously reimagining them for a new generation by making them lighter and more wearable without compromising their soul. At Kanasi, we value Naseem's refusal to let the intricate Kadhua and Fekwa techniques be lost to time.
“I feel a sense of pride in reviving the saris of the past. To take a hundred-year-old art and make it wearable for today is how we keep the heritage alive.”
