Thappa: The Weightless Grandeur of Gold

Bikaner, Gujarat and Jaipur, Rajasthan

Thappa is a heritage metal-forming technique used to create intricate, high-relief gold components that maintain a delicate weight. It is the foundation of traditional "Thappa Jadau" pieces, allowing for "statement" designs that remain comfortably wearable.

Origin

Historically rooted in the royal courts of Rajasthan and Gujarat, where it was developed to create grand ceremonial regalia. The craft thrives in these hubs due to the concentrated presence of Usta (specialised engravers) who create the custom steel dies required for the process. The word "Thappa" translates to "stamp" or "die." It evolved as a method to achieve the visual volume of heavy, solid-gold jewellery without the prohibitive weight. By using thin sheets of gold over a die, artisans could create a three-dimensional effect that looked substantial but was essentially a hollow shell.

Technique

The production of Thappa jewellery is a multi-disciplinary effort involving the engraver, the goldsmith, and the setter.

Die-Striking: An artisan uses a hand-carved steel die (the Thappa). A paper-thin sheet of 22K gold is placed over the die and struck repeatedly with a heavy hammer. This forces the soft gold into the microscopic grooves of the steel, capturing every detail of the design.

The "Ghaat" (Frame): Once the gold relief is removed from the die, it is hollow. To provide structural integrity, the back is filled with Laakh (a natural resin). This resin acts as a hard, internal skeleton that allows the piece to be handled without denting.

Jadau Setting: Uncut diamonds (Polki) are then pressed into the heated resin. Pure 24K gold foil is burnished around the edges of the stone to create a molecular bond, "locking" the stone in place without the use of modern prongs or solder.

The hallmark of high-quality Thappa is the "crispness" of the impression. Because the gold sheet is exceptionally thin, the striker must have perfect control; any over-striking can tear the metal, while under-striking results in a blurred, low-definition motif.

At Kanasi, we celebrate the "weightless grandeur" of Thappa through a selection of curated custom pieces, offering sculptural impact with effortless wearability.
