Boredom as a Gateway

The other day, I found myself lamenting how quickly time slips away. We rush from one task to another, making excuses for why we cannot simply sit, stand, and pause. To “smell the roses” feels almost like a distant memory.
Yet, when I observe the creation of handmade treasures, I am reminded of a different rhythm. The artisan repeats the same pattern, day after day, stroke after stroke, weave after weave. Some days, progress is invisible; other days, it is slow and steady. But in this repetition lies beauty, the quiet devotion that transforms monotony into art. Boring is definitely not dull.
It made me wonder: when did boredom go out of fashion? In truth, boredom is not emptiness, it is a gateway to reconnecting with ourselves. The hum of routine becomes a hymn, soothing the mind. Even as I type these words, the rhythm of my fingers on the keypad feels like music. Usually, I rush through my work, eager for the next task. But today, I linger. I think first, then write. Each step follows the other, unhurried, harmonious.
Why have we trained ourselves to multitask endlessly, as though constant motion was a virtue? Luxury, after all, is not about speed, it is about savouring.
Watching the elders around me, I once believed relaxation belonged to retirement. But why wait? Why not practice presence now? Sometimes, five minutes is all it takes. These days, I take time to sit in the sun, breathe fresh air, watch fallen leaves, count empty benches.
In those moments, I am not chasing time, I am inhabiting it. And those five minutes have become my most cherished ritual, a daily exercise in peace.
True luxury is not only found in fine silks or rare jewels. It is also found in the pause, in the quiet moments that restore us, in the deliberate care that artisans weave into their craft, and in the grace of simply being.
Perhaps the greatest indulgence of all is learning to switch off, so we may reconnect with ourselves.
